PRODUCTION RECORDS You couldn't imagine a banker or merchant trying to do busi- ness without records, could you? The same should hold true for the farmer. Many of today's farmers have larger capital in- vestments than many urban businessmen. Farmers should Use every maans at their dis- POSal to protect that invest- ment. This includes productioin records. For the farmer whose type or farming is primarily row crops, the records should include a n10 of numbered fields, land Preparation practices, planting densities and patterns, fertili- zation rates and kinds of ferti- lte s cultlVherb?::de n dates and prac- r,, and insecticide aPPlications, and crop ylelds. B.si, weather records including rainfall and temperatures w.ould also be helpful. For the livestock farmer, rec- ord of hay, feed grains, silage anti, grazing would be needed. LIME Lilning soybean land th.a needs it doe.s not cost, it pays big! By liming strongly acid soils we can expect an annual yield increase of seven to ten bushels pe,r acre. On moderately acid soil, we can look for three to seven bushels. It doesn't take much of a mathematician to figure the profits at the preent price or soybeans, especially when ,one application of lime lasts three or four years. SEED CARE If you are planning to save cotton and soybean seed for next year's crop, proper storage is essential. Both should be aerated immediately after be- ing put in storage. Cooling the seed helps preserve quality. Periodic aeration during stor- age will help prevent moisture accumulation. Checking on the stored seed at intervals will help detect problems before they cause much damage.
