Letter To The Editor Sept. 4, 2015 An e-marl scam that uses a fictitious court summons mes- sage tiffed 'hotice to appear in courf' has become active and is a ruse intended to persuade re- cipients to click on and open an attachment or a link that ~31 cause the recipienfs computer to become infc~d with a com- puter virus. The suspicious emails claim to be a notice to attend a court proceeding, although the e-mail recipient is not involved in any litigation. Persons who are not involved in litigation would not receive such e-mail from the Mississippi courts. One recent example reads as follows: Notice to Appear: 'This is to inform you to appear in the Court on September 12 for your case hearing. You are kindly asked to prepare and bring the documents relat- ing to the case to Court on the specified date. Note: If you do not come, the case will be heard in your absence. You can review complete details of the Court I want to thank the voters of the 1st District for allowing me to serve as your supervisor for the past four years. I have worked hard to earn your confidence. If re.elected, I will continue to work for the good of all of the people of the 1st District and Wilkinson County by initiating projects such as the recent overlaying of Rolling Hills Subdivision and the Jackson Louisiana Road and the replace- ment of two bridges. I want to see Wilkinson County grow and be a good place for families to live and work. Please give me your vote, and together we will keep work- ing to improve our great county. The recent recurrence of spam disguised as court cor- respondence is a variation of a scam that has appeared around the country for several years. Earlier similar scam emails stated that the recipients com- plaint had been received by the court, and attempted to get the recipient to open a link or an attached document. Re- cipients of those emails had not filed anything with the courts. Other variations ref- erence nonexistent arrest warrants, or tell the recipi- ent to send money.
