Bobby Thornhill, Former Pastor of Centreville & White's Chapel United Methodist Churches "Where there is no rev- elation, the people cast off restraint, but happy is he who keeps the law." Proverbs 29:18 (NKJV) We live in a time when precious little restraint is exercised in the world, and most Church folk are not exempt from this self cen- teredness either. There is much wisdom in this verse in Proverbs, it speaks vol- umes to us about the cause of our troubles, and, at the same time, gives us the solution. The key is in the Hebrew word chazown, (translated in most ver- sions as revelation or vi- sion), and its root word chazah, which means to see or contemplate (with pleasure). Now this verse can be properly understood as saying, where there is no perception or contem- plation (with pleasure) of God's revelation, the the law. In other words, when we pay no heed to God's revelation, when we are not joyfully obedient to what He says, then we are likely to cast off all re- straint and go our own way into unhappiness (Judg: es 21:25). This Proverb speaks to a multitude of problems in our Churches. Church folk stop matur- ing spiritually when they are not listening for and to God, Church programs falter when their leaders are not joyfully obedient to, or fail to listen for God's revelation. Financial re- sponsibility also crumbles when members are not listening to God's lead- ing, we become arrogant and self centered with lit- tle regard for God or the programs that He would have us support. The so- lution is found in the first sentence of 2 Chronicles 7:14, humility. Humility before God is the key to contemplating with plea- sure God's divine revela- tion, and according to this and Jim and Gretchen Over- (7th grade) Lexlea Ster- Kyleigh Brunet (lst place Slader Kinabrew; ,Star bey of Baton Rouge, LA. ling; (8th grade) Callie Mc- local, 2rid place district); Service Awards: Shanon Mary Smith plans to major Daniels & Cayla Robinson; Emma Bicker (lst place lo- Brecheen, Grace Rollins, in Biology at the University (Biology I) Lacy Darden; cal, 2nd place district); Mil- Emily Hopkins, Kylei I-~r- of Mississippi.
