According to Jean Piaget, here is a list of things the second grader earl do: 1. They understand that symbols represent concrete objects. Example: (plus sign = addition). 2. They are logical even though there are moments they jump to conclusions. But you are able to understand their wackiest thoughts. 3. Reverse Thinkers (Op- posites: Big/Small). 4. They think that every- one sees the world as they do, but they can understand an- other person's point of view. For an entire list please visit the website listed below: (Retrieved from the inter- net 05/15/2015: http'd/www. education.c0m/magazine/ar- tide/How child thinks sec- and aders/) It's all about Thinking! Knowing their thinking as teachers already do, you can develop their world at home so that they are filled with 24 hours of constant learn- ing. Learning can become a game of adding and subtract- ing. When reading a book, in addition to asking questions on every page of a book, (Ex- ample: What color was his hat?) you can let your world and their world intertwine with your creations so that the fun never ends. Vocabulary is also anoth- er key area. Ask your teacher for a list of all of the sight words for the third grade. Cause them to become famil- iar with these words before they arrive at 3rd. Add even bigger words to their second grade sight words For in- stance 1. "every": every + one = everyone, everybody, every- where, everything, etc. 2. "any": any + one = any- one, anybody, anywhere, anything, etc. Their world is a world of play. Fill it with all of the words you know they will need to know in future weeks, months and years. Let them decide when to step. You will know it by their Trustration levels' be- ing reached. Step! Give them a break, but let this be the starting point for learning even more later. Go to math and counting not only to 100 but ask what happens to the number 100? (100 + 1 = 101, 102, 103, etc.) Use lots of praise at this level: That was great! Fantastic! Wonderful! Endless list! Here are a few books for their reading in addition to the book list you will get from your teachers for the summer.
