Friday, March 23, 7973 The Woodville Republ;can, Woodville, Miss;ss;pp; OUNTY AGENT'S NOTES Recently sprigged coastal ber- mudagrass can be sprayed with two pounds of 2,4-D per acre for control ,of most annual and many seedling perenn, ial plants. The treatment should be made before the weeds emerge. For weed control in estab- lished coastal or midla,nd ber- mudagrass, use simazine at one to four pounds per acre. This should be applied before the weeds germinate ,but not within seven days after clipping. Pasture weeds result in lower forage yields, slower ,livestock gains, smnetimes poisoning of live,:tock, and poorer quality of livestock products. One of the more serious weeds is bitterweed, especially on pas- tures for dairy cattle. The bit- terweeds can be easily controlled with 2,4-D either as ,a pre- emergence or post-emergence treatment. Applications of one to two ble creeps are planted. For post-emergence control, use one pound per acre of amine 2,4-D before the weeds are one inch tall. FERTILIZER PLACEMENT Fertilizer should be placed so that it is available to the plants dur,ing early growth, but far enough away to prevent injury to seedlings and possible loss of sta, nds. Anhydrous ammonia can be a real problem if it is placed too close to the seed or to the ,roots after the crop is up. Broadcasting mixed fertilizers will dilute :the total concentra- tion so tha:t 4njury to plants s.hould not be a problem. ,Ba.nded fertilizers should be placed at least six inches to the side of the seed drill and below the seedling depth.
